Pune scientists develop ultra-thin material for next-generation gadgets

Pune: Scientists at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, have developed a method to make large and stable nanosheets of 2D semiconductor material called bismuth oxyselenide (Bi2O2Se). Using this, the team fabricated microscopic electronic devices that are about 1,000 times thinner than human hair. “Imagine trying to make a very thin, super-smooth sheet, so thin it’s almost invisible. It can carry electricity really fast and still work even if you bend it again and again, thousands of times, like a foldable smartphone. That’s what we did. We figured out a reliable way to grow large, high-quality sheets of Bi2O2Se. The discovery makes this material scalable and useful in real devices,” said Atikur Rahman, faculty member and team leader on this work. This advancement could pave the way for faster and more reliable wearable sensors, flexible photodetectors, foldable displays, and low-power electronics. “More importantly, it opens the door to scalable manufacturing of high-performance 2D materials, bridging the gap between academic research and industrial technology,” added Rahman.
