In 1882, Oscar Wilde stepped onto the shores of New York to kick off an extensive speaking tour across America. When a customs official inquired about his possessions, he reportedly delivered one of his famed quips. Yet, historians have debated the authenticity of this exchange as contemporary records are lacking. Biographer Arthur Ransome first recorded this anecdote in his 1912 work.
