Five members of the Dalton Gang rode into Coffeyville, Kansas, intending to rob two banks simultaneously. The robbery started well until someone recognized a gang member and alerted the townspeople. As locals armed themselves, the gang found themselves trapped and facing gunfire. In the ensuing shootout, four gang members and four townsfolk were killed, while Emmett Dalton was severely injured.
