Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have jointly won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. Hegemann and Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin, a light-sensitive algal protein, while Deisseroth developed its use as a light-controlled switch for nerve cells. Their work enabled researchers to study neural circuits linked to memories, feelings and behaviour and has influenced neuroscience and research into visual restoration.
