More than a century after Maine’s Penobscot Nation lost control of much of its ancestral landscape, 11,297 acres have now been returned; the wider $32.5 million effort aims to return more than 30,000 acres

Maine forest land returns to Penobscot Nation in September 2026. This marks the first phase of restoring over thirty thousand acres of homeland. The project began in 2023 with a fundraising goal of thirty-two point five million dollars. Currently, twenty point seven million dollars has been raised for the ongoing effort. Ownership grants the Penobscot Nation greater authority over land management and conservation.
