Decades after their installation, Washington’s artificial tire reefs, initially intended to enhance fishing habitats, have turned into a pressing environmental concern. State agencies are currently engaged in a removal process due to the deterioration of polypropylene ropes leading to tire dispersion on beaches. The leaching of harmful chemicals from the degrading tires poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems, with over 100,000 tires yet to be extracted from Puget Sound.
