Fort Ord in California once served as a major US Army training base, with about 1.5 million soldiers passing through before it closed in 1994. Today, much of the former military land forms Fort Ord National Monument, protecting 14,651 acres of coastal landscape with 86 miles of trails, native wildflowers, oak woodlands and wildlife including mountain lions, bobcats and coyotes.
