In 1986, five-year-old Saroo Brierley became separated from his family after falling asleep on a train and eventually ended up in Kolkata, thousands of kilometres from home. Adopted by an Australian couple, he grew up in Tasmania but never forgot fragments of his childhood. Decades later, he used Google Earth to piece together memories of railway stations, bridges, a dam and other landmarks, eventually identifying his hometown of Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh. In 2012, Saroo travelled to India and reunited with his mother and siblings after 25 years apart, while also learning the tragic fate of his elder brother.
