In 2009 Australia began removing rats and rabbits from Broughton Island; by 2018, an estimated 64,500 pairs of wedge-tailed shearwaters were breeding there

Broughton Island in New South Wales has successfully implemented a program to eradicate invasive rats and rabbits. This initiative has led to significantly better nesting environments for a variety of seabird species, notably the Gould’s petrel. A seabird survey conducted in 2009 revealed around 55,400 breeding pairs of wedge-tailed shearwaters. By 2018, this number increased to roughly 64,500, highlighting a positive trend in population growth.
