In 2007, Denzel Washington gave $1 million to revive a Texas college’s debate programme; seven years later, its 23-member team won the overall title at a national tournament with 80 schools

Denzel Washington donated $1 million to Wiley College in Texas to revive its debate programme in 2007. The programme had been inactive since 1947 and soon regained prominence in collegiate debate. In 2014, the Wiley College debate team won a national tournament, defeating 80 other schools. Washington has since followed the team’s progress and pledged to continue financial support.
