Choate Island, formerly Hog Island, transitioned from Indigenous settlements to farms. European settlers and the Choate family shaped its agricultural landscape for centuries. Richard T. Crane Jr. began acquiring land in the early twentieth century. His wife, Miné Crane, later gifted the island to The Trustees of Reservations. This gift established the Crane Wildlife Refuge, preserving its diverse history and ecology.
