Following its congressional approval in 1913, San Francisco commenced the Hetch Hetchy Project with construction starting in 1914. The O’Shaughnessy Dam’s initial phase concluded by 1923, transforming the valley into Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. By 1934, this reservoir began delivering water to San Francisco through a vast network of infrastructure. Now, it provides essential water to over 2.7 million residents in the Bay Area, while also facilitating regional hydroelectric power generation.
