Harmeet Desai discovered table tennis at age six after his father brought a table home. He showed keen interest and his father hired a coach, Shabbir Bengali, for him. His mother became his first competitor, and he enjoyed beating her frequently. By age seven, Desai was winning against older players and at district tournaments. He ultimately chose table tennis over tennis, which marked a significant turning point.
