Hospital held newborn for 9 hours over bill row; Maharashtra consumer panel imposes fine

A hospital was penalised for detaining a newborn over a billing dispute. The commission found the hospital’s actions callous and insensitive towards the infant. The patient cannot be detained for want of bill clearance, the commission stated. The hospital must pay compensation including a refund and accrued interest. This ruling followed a nine-year-old incident involving a two-day-old baby.
