He discussed DNA sequencing over beers in 1997; how Shankar Balasubramanian helped transform the way the world reads genomes

Indian-born chemist Shankar Balasubramanian, along with David Klenerman and Pascal Mayer, has received the 2026 Wolf Prize in Chemistry for pioneering work that transformed DNA sequencing. Their breakthrough emerged from a 1997 Cambridge pub meeting and led to Solexa, a company that developed a faster, lower-cost sequencing approach using fluorescently labelled DNA building blocks. Acquired by Illumina in 2007, the technology became central to next-generation sequencing, enabling large-scale genomic research across medicine, genetics, disease studies and evolutionary biology.
