Genesis of Jantar Mantar as India’s dissent square

Boat Club lawns were Delhi’s primary protest venue until the early 1990s. Security concerns led authorities to seek an alternative site for large demonstrations. By 1993, Jantar Mantar became the designated location for significant public gatherings. This site offers visibility to Parliament and media while being manageable. The observatory’s adjacent stretch now hosts protests, not the monument itself.
