Abhay Karandikar, an IIT Kanpur alumnus and former IIT Bombay professor, has built a career spanning telecommunications research, higher education and government policy. After nearly three decades at IIT Bombay, he became Director of IIT Kanpur and later served as Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology. His work includes affordable broadband, 5G, 5G-Advanced and emerging 6G technologies. In May 2026, Karandikar joined NITI Aayog as a Member focusing on science, technology and innovation.
