In the wake of Japan’s 2011 disaster, dogs abandoned in Fukushima displayed significant long-term stress. Compared to other abandoned canines, these dogs showed reduced trainability and attachment abilities. Their cortisol levels in urine were alarmingly high, remaining five to ten times elevated for several weeks. Research into these animals unveiled how their traumatic experiences critically affected their psychological and physical health even post-rescue.
