A water channel built 2,000 years ago in ancient Smyrna continues to function and carries water. Archaeologists are excavating the city to uncover more remains and preserve its history. Although the water is unsuitable for drinking, it is used to irrigate nearby green spaces. Smyrna has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List since 2020 for its historical significance.
