First introduced in 1884, water hyacinth quickly established itself as a troublesome invasive species in Louisiana. This aggressive aquatic plant has disrupted navigation and significantly changed water quality. Despite various mechanical and chemical control measures proving inadequate, biocontrol methods were eventually employed. However, vast areas within the Barataria Basin are still heavily overrun by this invasive menace.
