In 1997, Kazakhstan began surrounding Astana with trees; around 78,000 hectares were forested to slow dust, wind and blizzards
Kazakhstan transformed Astana’s harsh steppe environment by planting extensive forests. This long-term, nature-based strategy addressed wind, dust, and extreme temperatures. Scientific research guided species selection and planting techniques for success. The initiative created green spaces and employment while improving air quality. Lessons learned are now being applied to other cities across Kazakhstan.
