In 1976, John Denver and Thomas Crum established the Windstar Foundation, aiming to promote environmental education. By 1978 and 1979, they successfully acquired nearly 957 acres for their campus. Later on, financial backing came from the National Wildlife Federation and Rocky Mountain Institute. In 1996, a conservation easement was placed to protect the majority of the land, ensuring the preservation of this untouched ranch property for future generations.
