At 17, Rhode Island student Alaina Zhang is studying whether native sugar kelp can help remove excess nitrogen from polluted coastal waters. Her Harvesting Change project has grown from personal experiences in China into field research, scientific presentations and environmental advocacy, earning recognition as a 2025 Gloria Barron Prize winner.
