The human presence in St Kilda came to an end in 1930, resulting in the extinction of its house mouse population. Interestingly, field mice took advantage of the vacant buildings once inhabited by house mice. Researchers suggest that it was the competition with the field mice, rather than just food scarcity, that led to the decline. Today, the St Kilda field mouse thrives on the islands.
