In a recent study, researchers deployed rubber barriers to create an oxygen-deprived environment for invasive Asian clams in Lake Tahoe. This novel method resulted in high mortality rates among the clams across roughly five acres in Emerald Bay. Although effective in controlling the invasive species, the treatment also posed challenges for native aquatic life and incurred substantial costs, presenting a promising yet complex non-chemical solution for ecosystem management.
