Smith Mountain Lake has experienced a troubling decline in fish populations attributed to habitat loss observed over the past sixty years. In an effort to combat this issue, biologists introduced artificial habitat structures to offer critical shelter for young fish. Since 2017, more than one hundred units have been erected by volunteers and staff, with ongoing efforts annually aimed at rejuvenating the essential littoral complexities of the lake.
