Caution: AI models that don’t explain themselves threaten to speed up a perilous arms race

OpenAI’s much hyped Astra model may be faster and cheaper to run, but it throws caution to the wind in some ways. Since it doesn’t spell out its ‘chain of thought,’ it’s harder for us to check how it achieved a task. That AI firms are taking this path should worry us.
