Critically endangered pygmy raccoons on Cozumel Island were observed making paper toy balls. These juvenile raccoons retrieved paper from bins and rolled it with water and sand. One raccoon learned the behavior by watching her sister, which was later observed independently. Researchers documented this as preliminary evidence of socially mediated object use in the species. Further research is needed to confirm if this behavior extends beyond this family.
