In 2000, NOAA planted 500 square metres of cordgrass and added oyster shell on Pivers Island; the shell mound grew into a living oyster reef

A North Carolina living shoreline project stabilized the coast using cordgrass and oyster shells. This established marsh habitat faced two major hurricane tests in 2011 and 2018. NOAA assessments revealed substantially less erosion compared to hardened shorelines during these storms. The project demonstrated the resilience of planted marshes and oyster reefs against severe weather. These living shorelines also support coastal habitats and accumulate sediment effectively.
