Research conducted during an extended drought in Brazil’s Caxiuana National Forest indicated initial resilience among trees. However, the eventual failure of large grown trees resulted in major biomass depletion and increased carbon release. As the forest shifted its role from a carbon reservoir to a net carbon emitter, the surviving vegetation adapted to find water, ultimately leading to a structurally distinct forest with diminished carbon storage.
