A 2020 Shanghai experiment compared 3 roofs; the planted roof reduced summer cooling load and improved winter insulation

A Shanghai experiment compared green, cool, and conventional roofs during summer and winter conditions. Green roofs reduced cooling loads by 3.6% and heating loads by 6.2%. Cool roofs also reduced cooling loads but increased heating loads significantly. Vegetation and soil provided insulation, improving roof-deck temperatures in winter. The study showed roof performance depends on climate and building needs.
