The 1880s marked a significant introduction of Chinese pheasants to Oregon by Judge Owen Nickerson Denny. Although his initial transport attempts resulted in high casualties amongst the birds, an 1882 release in the Willamette Valley proved fruitful. The pheasants thrived in Oregon’s agricultural environment, reproducing quickly and prompting states across the U.S. to consider similar introductions.
