An LPD is a large amphibious military warship designed to transport troops, armored vehicles, and helicopters, that can land directly onto hostile or undeveloped shores using built-in watercraft. The Indian Navy currently operates only one aging LPD, INS Jalashwa. Aside from combat landings, LPDs serve as command-and-control centers and are heavily deployed for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), evacuating citizens, and carrying medical supplies.
