Established in 1931, Floyd Bennett Field was New York City’s municipal airport before evolving into a vital naval aviation site for decades. After its deactivation by the U.S. Navy in 1971, the area transformed into part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Presently, the former airfield has become a haven for diverse wildlife and offers various public recreational activities.
