China to tax offshore trusts as Beijing targets overseas wealth

China’s new tax regulations taking effect on Friday will impose taxes on offshore trusts and their associated incomes. A twenty percent tax rate will apply to asset transfers moving into these trusts. Annual income sourced from controlled offshore entities will also be taxed at twenty percent. In a bid to curb evasion, some foreign residents may be classified as Chinese tax residents.
