Kentucky Dam, the longest in the TVA system, was built to combat flooding and provide electricity. Its construction began in 1938 and concluded with gate closure in 1944. The resulting Kentucky Lake became the largest artificial lake east of the Mississippi River. This vast reservoir now supports navigation and generates significant hydroelectric power for the region. The area surrounding the lake has also developed into a major outdoor recreation destination.
