An American Liberty Ship wreck off Bari, Italy, has been identified after eighty-two years. Researchers identified the vessel as the SS Samuel J. Tilden, sunk in 1943. German bombers attacked the harbor, sinking seventeen ships and killing over a thousand men. This event earned Bari the nickname “the Pearl Harbor of the Mediterranean.” The wreck offers a preserved glimpse into World War II maritime history.
