40 years, 1.1 million tonnes of waste: Will Srinagar’s garbage mountain vanish or keep making lives miserable?

Srinagar’s Achan landfill has accumulated over one million metric tonnes of legacy waste. Fresh waste continues to be dumped daily, exacerbating the existing problem. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation is now undertaking biomining and bioremediation efforts to clear the waste. A comprehensive integrated waste management system is being established to prevent future accumulation. The site is planned to be transformed into a landfill-cum-eco-park over the next two years.
