Young Virginia Military Institute cadets bravely charged into battle during the Civil War. They advanced across a treacherous, rain-soaked wheat field, losing shoes in the deep mud. This courageous action helped secure a Confederate victory at the Battle of New Market. Ten cadets tragically died and nearly fifty were wounded in the intense fighting. Their sacrifice is annually commemorated at the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park.
