Southern Railway is replacing manual level-crossing barriers with electrically operated lifting barriers (EOLBs) across the Chennai Division, cutting opening and closing time from up to three minutes to around eight to 12 seconds. Of 143 manned level crossings, 70 have been upgraded so far, while Emergency Sliding Booms have been installed at 133 crossings as an additional safety measure.
