Decades before AI became mainstream, Indian-born mathematician and computer scientist Ranan Bihari Banerji was exploring how machines could solve problems. His 1969 book, Theory of Problem Solving: An Approach to Artificial Intelligence, examined problem representation, learning, patterns and computational methods. Born in 1928, Banerji later taught in the US and published around 90 technical papers. Beyond computer science, he was an ordained Hindu priest, associated with the Quaker community, and wrote about science, consciousness and spirituality.
