Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport, once a key site during the Berlin Airlift, closed to commercial flights in 2008 and was later opened as a vast public park. After a 2014 referendum rejected redevelopment plans, the former airfield was permanently protected. Today, Tempelhofer Feld’s huge runways and open spaces host cycling, picnics, kite flying and community gardens.
