Indian Forest Service officer Pandillapalli Srinivas took an unconventional approach to countering Veerappan, combining forest operations with efforts to improve the lives of remote communities. Posted in Karnataka’s forests, he helped provide roads, drinking water, homes and healthcare while persuading several gang members to surrender. In November 1991, Srinivas was killed after agreeing to meet Veerappan unarmed. He was 37. Awarded the Kirti Chakra posthumously, Srinivas continues to be remembered in Gopinatham for his service.
